Classical design was a top priority for the new Florence Middle School. The exterior drew inspiration from Tuscan detailing using cast stone in a color that complements the brick. The building was organized around a central commons, connecting academics, fine-arts, and athletics while also serving as a pre-function space for public events. The prominent two-story façade of the academics’ wing was oriented west of the commons, taking advantage of traffic visibility along the campus’s west edge, while wrapping itself around a grass courtyard with controlled access. The security and safety of the students at Florence Middle School was a top priority when designing the school building. Security was integrally designed using clear lines of sight and electronically-controlled public access to secure both exterior and interior student spaces. For safety, the gymnasium doubles as a FEMA-rated storm shelter accommodating three times the school population.
