Florence City Schools aimed to increase security and update the façade at Harlan Elementary School. Lambert Ezell Durham Architecture, LLC was hired to design an administration building at the front of the school to accomplish these goals, as well as planning renovations to the interior of the existing building.

The Administration Building is split into two sides, with a lobby in between. On one side is the receptionist, bookkeeper, and principal. On the other side is the school nurse's office, with an accompanying isolation room and storage areas. The lobby acts as a security checkpoint. Any visitors must check in with the receptionist before they have access to any other part of the school.

LED designed the façade of the Administration Building to be a focal point at the front of the school. The brick matches the existing school building, while the cast stone contrasts it. Large curtain wall windows draw attention to the entrance and let light into the lobby. An asymmetrical barrel vault adds a creative flair, ideal for an elementary school.

To complete the project, the previous administrative area in the existing school was renovated, giving the assistant principal and school resource officer their own dedicated spaces and adding a teachers' workroom and storage. The nearby restrooms were also renovated to meet ADA requirements and to update the finishes.
