The four-story Science and Technology Building serves the physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering technology departments for UNA. The building houses classroom spaces, laboratories, offices, and student gathering spaces on each floor. The predetermined site location proved to be one of the more challenging aspects of the project and limited the building’s orientation towards Pine Street to the east. The north end of the site slopes dramatically, while the south end houses the university-run elementary school. Several solutions were used to resolve these challenges. Both the front south façade and the rear north façade were developed to create visual interest for traffic along Pine Street. Architectural massing, form, and detailing were developed to harmonize with the early 19th-century architecture of the main campus for which the university is known.
